Year in and year out, Eddie Muller and the Film Noir Foundation team deliver an impeccably curated selection of film noir, combining canonical classics with wonderful rarities ripe for rediscovery. Following the flagship edition of the festival, held earlier this year at San Francisco’s famed Castro Theatre, all of the selections in this year’s edition of Noir City DC are double features, inspired by the mid-century Hollywood tradition of pairing top-tier studio “A” pictures with shorter, lower-budget second features, or “B” films, during their release. Select screenings will be introduced by TCM hosts Alan K. Rode and Eddie Muller.

Doors at 6:00 PM
Show at 6:30 PM

Alan K. Rode, celebrated author, film historian, and charter director of Film Noir Foundation, will join us for an introduction to SHAKEDOWN!

“His Camera Was More Deadly Than a Gangster’s Gun!”

Step out of the sun and into the darkness with this incredibly rare, hugely entertaining hard-boiled Film Noir about a ruthless, career-obsessed photojournalist who finds himself on the payroll of both the newspaper and a notorious crime boss. As things go from bad to worse, under-appreciated Director Joseph Pevney unspools the pulpy yarn with explosive, fast-paced aplomb that will leave you breathless (and make you wonder why genre movies are ever longer than 85 minutes). Predating better-known Noirs like Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole and Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, this brute-force critique of ambition in the media stars Howard Duff (The Naked City), Peggy Dow (Harvey) and Brian Donlevy (The Big Combo). This film is not available on DVD or streaming, catch it with us on beautiful 16MM, the way it was intended — flickering on the big screen with a room full of friends and strangers.

To offer a bit of poetry with the pulp, we’ll be starting with Herman G. Weinberg’s gorgeous 1931 experimental short Autumn Fire.”

Please note: Stand-by tickets will be available night of show on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All ticket holders must be seated 15 minutes prior to show start time or tickets are subject to re-sale.
