SUMMER NOIR: Joseph Pevney’s SHAKEDOWN + Herman G. Weinberg’s AUTUMN FIRE

July 28, 2019

Doors at 6:00 PM
Show at 6:30 PM

Alan K. Rode, celebrated author, film historian, and charter director of Film Noir Foundation, will join us for an introduction to SHAKEDOWN!

“His Camera Was More Deadly Than a Gangster’s Gun!”

Step out of the sun and into the darkness with this incredibly rare, hugely entertaining hard-boiled Film Noir about a ruthless, career-obsessed photojournalist who finds himself on the payroll of both the newspaper and a notorious crime boss. As things go from bad to worse, under-appreciated Director Joseph Pevney unspools the pulpy yarn with explosive, fast-paced aplomb that will leave you breathless (and make you wonder why genre movies are ever longer than 85 minutes). Predating better-known Noirs like Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole and Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, this brute-force critique of ambition in the media stars Howard Duff (The Naked City), Peggy Dow (Harvey) and Brian Donlevy (The Big Combo). This film is not available on DVD or streaming, catch it with us on beautiful 16MM, the way it was intended — flickering on the big screen with a room full of friends and strangers.

To offer a bit of poetry with the pulp, we’ll be starting with Herman G. Weinberg’s gorgeous 1931 experimental short Autumn Fire.”

Please note: Stand-by tickets will be available night of show on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All ticket holders must be seated 15 minutes prior to show start time or tickets are subject to re-sale.

Actor robert mitchum in the noir thriller night of the hunter.

Charles Laughton’s lone directorial departure, The Night of the Hunter, is one of the most chilling and haunting films ever set to celluloid. Robert Mitchum is beyond terrifying as a serial-killing preacher in the Deep South, set on hunting children in his search for fortune. With a striking Southern Gothic atmosphere and stunning black-and-white imagery that will burn itself into your brain, this is one gorgeously twisted masterpiece.
