SUMMER NOIR: Joseph Pevney’s SHAKEDOWN + Herman G. Weinberg’s AUTUMN FIRE

July 28, 2019

Doors at 6:00 PM
Show at 6:30 PM

Alan K. Rode, celebrated author, film historian, and charter director of Film Noir Foundation, will join us for an introduction to SHAKEDOWN!

“His Camera Was More Deadly Than a Gangster’s Gun!”

Step out of the sun and into the darkness with this incredibly rare, hugely entertaining hard-boiled Film Noir about a ruthless, career-obsessed photojournalist who finds himself on the payroll of both the newspaper and a notorious crime boss. As things go from bad to worse, under-appreciated Director Joseph Pevney unspools the pulpy yarn with explosive, fast-paced aplomb that will leave you breathless (and make you wonder why genre movies are ever longer than 85 minutes). Predating better-known Noirs like Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole and Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, this brute-force critique of ambition in the media stars Howard Duff (The Naked City), Peggy Dow (Harvey) and Brian Donlevy (The Big Combo). This film is not available on DVD or streaming, catch it with us on beautiful 16MM, the way it was intended — flickering on the big screen with a room full of friends and strangers.

To offer a bit of poetry with the pulp, we’ll be starting with Herman G. Weinberg’s gorgeous 1931 experimental short Autumn Fire.”

Please note: Stand-by tickets will be available night of show on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All ticket holders must be seated 15 minutes prior to show start time or tickets are subject to re-sale.

The 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Noir Festival

poster for Noir City International Film FestivalAmerica doesn’t have a monopoly on swaggering gangsters, larcenous lovers, surly ex-cons, corrupt cops, and scheming femmes fatales. Six years after the first NOIR CITY: INTERNATIONAL—the Film Noir Foundation is at it again: presenting an array of classic films from around the globe, a wide-ranging, thematically cohesive immersion in a sordid world of sinister and sexy affairs—including the world premieres of two new restorations by the Film Noir Foundation! Yes, “It’s a Bitter Little World”— but for ten days and nights at the majestic Egyptian Theatre, nighttime photo of The Egyptian Theatre neon marqueeNOIR CITY is cinema paradiso! The festival is programmed and co-hosted by Eddie Muller and Alan K. Rode.

For veteran cinephiles, it’s a chance to again experience cherished cinematic masterpieces in a bona fide movie palace. For those just starting their cinematic journey, NOIR CITY is the perfect introduction to a wide world of international filmmakers and stars, on the big screen, larger than life. The 10-day excursion travels through hot-blooded nightclubs of the Mexican cabareteras, neon-streaked alleys of Japanese yakuza thrillers, the stylish Parisian underworld, Italian palazzos hiding crimes of every social strata, a Kafkaesque Prague as envisioned by the Czech New Wave — even a rare serial killer film set in Nazi Germany made by Hollywood’s finest director of film noir, Robert Siodmak. Tour guides include some of the world’s most revered filmmakers: Michelangelo Antonioni, Andzrej Wajda, Julien Duvivier, Jean-Pierre Melville, Roberto Gavaldón, Jirí Weiss, and Masahiro Shinoda.

Behind the Blacklist Double Feature: Odds Against Tomorrow and Force of Evil – Skirball Cultural Center July 9, 2023 @ Skirball Cultural Center
Jul 9 @ 11:00 am – 3:30 pm

Two black and white movie stills: male stars of odds against tomorrow force of evil.

About the Program

Check out two classic films by Blacklisted screenwriter and director Abraham Polonsky! Born in New York City to Russian Jewish immigrants, Polonsky was a committed Marxist, union supporter, and proud member of the Communist Party. Like many Blacklisted screenwriters, Polonsky continued to write under pseudonyms and fronts. While it is now known Polonsky wrote Odds Against Tomorrow, many of his scripts remain uncredited to this day.

In between films, hear film historian Alan Rode speak with Hank Polonsky about Abraham Polonsky’s experience with the Hollywood Red Scare and its impact on their family.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

11:00 am— Odds Against Tomorrow
This multi-layered film stars Hollywood legends Harry Belafonte, Robert Ryan, and Ed Begley as three desperate men who band together for a dangerous heist. Beyond its gripping plot, Odds Against Tomorrow issues a strong statement about the endemic racism at the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. Directed by Robert Wise. (1959, 96 min. No MPAA rating.)

12:45 pm—Conversation and Q&A with Hank Polonsky
Moderated by film historian, author, and cinema host Alan Rode.

2:00 pm— Force of Evil
Force of Evil stars John Garfield as a lawyer embroiled in a scheme to control “the numbers racket” in New York City, leading to a series of events that test his morality and loyalty. Polonsky’s directorial debut is a poetic urban saga underscoring how unbridled capitalistic greed creates personal debasement and tragedy. (1948, 78 min. No MPAA rating.)
